Redefining "Home"

As we pack up the home we’ve lived in for the past 19 years and prepare to be Nomads, I’ve been thinking about what the word “home” means. The place we’ve called home has so many memories: raising kids with all the big and little moments as a family along the way, celebrating holidays with friends and family (our blood family and our chosen family), traditions of NYE parties, crab feasts, pumpkins carving and seed roasting, Seder’s, Hamantaschen baking, latke frying, book club gatherings, Bunco with the girls in the ‘hood and the list goes on. Though the house we lived in is where it all happened, it was always the people, the celebrations themselves, and the moments/traditions that held meaning.

As we uproot our physical home for the next year, I’ve begun to wonder how we will re-create “home” while on the road. I keep coming back to the people and the moments that have rooted us.

Technology is a wonder in keeping us connected, but, can it facilitate creating moments of home from afar? Can we FaceTime into a Seder, make Hamantaschen or matzo crack together while on the other side of the world; will I even be able to find the right ingredients!? Can Sushi dinner over zoom with girlfriends be enough?

Perhaps home will take on a new definition for us during this next adventure. Not rooted in a place, but rather in the people and the moments that give it meaning. Maybe some of you will come visit with us along our journey and we can define home together yet again.

For now, we’re re-settling briefly in Truckee, Tahoe, our #happyplace, before spending some time with family in LA. We hit the skies and the world July 23rd with a quick stop in Istanbul on our way to South Africa!

To that end, a roadmap as David would say, our adventure is below, a more detailed view is on this blog in the "our itinerary" menu - if you’d like to join us at “home” in any of these places we’d love to have you!

  • Early October - Croatia & Montenegro

  • Late October thru November - Spain & Portugal

  • Early December - Morocco (there is still time to join our private tour!)

  • Late January - Vietnam

  • February into March - Cambodia & Laos

  • April - Japan

  • May into June - Indonesia

  • June - “home” (unless David convinces me to head to New Zealand and South America!)

It was great to meet you guys in a Phnom Penh, and to learn about your blog. As the great Glinda of Oz once said, “It’s always best to start at the beginning,” so I dug around on your blog to find your first post. I can’t wait to catch up on your journey and then follow along.

Beautiful perspective of a home for 19 years. You are will find so many new friends and family along the way and be invited into other peoples' homes. The best part of traveling for me is learning how others live their lives and connecting with people. Memories galore will be created just remember to enjoy the moment whether it's a second, a minute or an hour as you explore new ways of living and different cultures.

You can always find home in your heart when connecting with people and if that doesn't work you can fall back on technology to lead you home.💗

If you need any tips in Japan, please let me know. I lived there for four years. My basic first recommendation is to spend a week in Kyoto if you can.

Hope I can finagle a work trip in September and then again in October/November. I’ll see if I can make some extended weekend time lineup.
