France, Part 2: Slowing Down on the river, luxury cruising

If you’re like us, when you picture a European river cruise, you envision a passive, slow-paced vacation centered around big group tours, guides with pennant flags and rigid schedules. It’s an easy stereotype to buy into but it was definitely not our recent experience. Ours was more like stepping into a boutique luxury hotel, but on a ship that sailed through the heart of Provence, the Rhône Valley, and Burgundy.

On our recent journey through France, we traded the highway for the tranquil waters of the Saône and Rhône rivers aboard a Riverside Luxury Cruise.

It completely shattered our assumptions, including the twenty-something who was traveling with us.

Instead of feeling confined, we found an experience that balanced active outdoor adventures, immersive cultural experiences, and five-star floating luxury. Best of all? You unpack your bags exactly once (or better yet, let your private butler do it for you 😉). While the rolling hills, ancient vineyards, and historic towns change outside your window each day, your private suite remains your constant sanctuary.

What an  amazing way to shift your perspective on France.

Lyon: Romans, Secret Passageways, and Culinary Power

Navigating these historic waterways in France, will generally include a port stop in Lyon - the undisputed gastronomic capital of France. Lyon showed us so much more than its Michelin-starred reputation; besides, we were eating very well on our ship!

Perched high above the city sits the breathtaking Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière and remarkably preserved Roman amphitheaters that remind you just how deep this region’s roots run. Down below, in the narrow streets of Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon), lies one of the city’s coolest secrets: traboules. We were blown away to discover these hidden, pedestrian passageways built directly through residential buildings and courtyards. Exploring these secret corridors and courtyards with a local guide feels like embarking on treasure hunt, offering a private look into historical Lyon.

Active Countryside: Vines, Views, and E-Bikes

Some of us are easily affected by motion and were a little reserved about what the river would feel like - rest assured, we felt great the whole time! And thankful for that as there’s so much to enjoy just watching the landscape from the ship. From the legendary terroirs of Burgundy, home to some of the world’s most coveted wines to dramatic landscapes, and even a stunning lightening show!

From boutique river ports dotted along the Rhône and Saône, the opportunities for outdoor exploration were awesome:

  • E-Biking & Wine Tasting - With a small group of similarly active guests who also loved wine, we rode along the river enjoying fields of sunflowers, farmland, quick stops to learn a bit about the area and finally for some wine tasting. Not to worry, we were picked up at the winery and driven to the boat, which we met at the next port - no drinking and biking here!

  • Hiking Above the Vines: One day we opted for a hike in the hills above historic vine villages. The views were stunning, giving us a better appreciation for the region. And of course, no activity is complete without some wine tasting, this one accompanied by local cheese in a picnic-like setting. No better pay-off after a hike.

  • Village tour options: A bit less active but nonetheless fun to explore.  At one village port we ventured inland to Beaune, the heart of the Burgundy wine trade, to explore centuries-old wine cellars and the iconic, multi-colored tiled roof of the 15th-century Hospices de Beaune. What a history!

Active excursions completely changed the cadence of traveling through this area. And the best part, we unpacked once and easily earned our afternoon cocktail AND our evening glass of wine, chosen by our new BFF Sommelier on the ship.

Onboard Indulgence: Floating Boutique Luxury

When returning to the ship after an active day ashore, the onboard experience feels like stepping into a private sanctuary. Riverside’s approach to river cruising focuses on spacious, suite-only accommodations, exceptional service, and genuine human warmth.

Having a dedicated private butler means your every preference is anticipated, from taking care of that day-one unpacking to arranging for gluten free beer in your fridge!!! Onboard, the days flow effortlessly between wellness and indulgence:

  • A massage at the spa after a morning hike through the hills

  • An interactive mixology class led by an amazingly humble, incredibly talented bartender who quickly becomes your favorite person on the ship

  • World-class cuisine paired by the ship’s dedicated sommelier (another new bff) What truly stood out is how seamlessly the culinary team handled food allergies and dietary restrictions, delivering bespoke, high-end meals tailored to our needs without ever making us feel like a burden.

The Tuckerz Travel Takeaway

If you’ve always assumed river cruising meant sacrificing independence or activity, floating through France’s heartland proves that luxury and adventure aren't mutually exclusive. It challenges the idea that a vacation has to be exhausting to be fulfilling, showing you that you can hike through ancient vineyards by day, unpack your bags just once, and indulge in five-star culinary art by night.

In an era dominated by AI travel tools and automated algorithms, anyone can generate a generic river cruise itinerary or pull up a list of top-rated ship amenities. But an algorithm can't get you room upgrades, VIP welcome amenities, or generous onboard credits that make your stay extra special. More importantly, AI can't tell you which river vessel fits your personal travel style, how to choose the deck location that avoids engine noise, or how to handle complex dietary needs at sea.

That human layer of insight and connection is the difference between a nice trip and an extraordinary one. We leverage our firsthand experience and industry relationships to match you with the exact cruise line, ship, and custom perks that elevate your vacation into a masterpiece.

Ilene, as I mentioned before your consummate professional writing style is down to earth, but titillates the mind with the occasional erudite term or phrase, prompting the reader to pack a bag even before they’ve called you to book one of those memorable experiences requisite to discovering its meaning. Thank you so much for sharing your own personal trip experiences.😃
