France, Part 1 - Uncorking Bordeaux: Experiencing France’s most iconic wine region without the pretension
And, why the Best Day in Bordeaux Wine Country Has Nothing to Do with Wine
If there is one wine region in the world that carries a reputation for being intimidating, prestigious, and a bit buttoned-up, it’s Bordeaux. For generations, travelers have viewed it as the exclusive playground of serious collectors and sommelier elites.
Here’s the secret we learned, it doesn't have to be that way at all.
We recently spent time exploring Bordeaux and its surroundings, and it reshaped how we view this region. First, the region of Bordeaux is enormous and with a lot of variety, so even if you don’t think you like red blends, I’m pretty sure you’ll find a few things you like. Second, when you peel back the layers of historic prestige, Bordeaux reveals itself to be warm, approachable, deeply connected to the land, and shockingly diverse. And I don’t just mean the wine, the people were as well.
Below are our thoughts and experiences about the Bordeaux region, from its grand 18th-century streets to coastal oyster shacks, without an ounce of pretense.
"Mini Paris"
The city of Bordeaux itself is the perfect entry point to the region. It’s often called "Mini Paris" as the historic city center has grand 18th-century architecture, wide limestone boulevards, cute and charming pedestrian streets, sidewalk cafés, and elegant riverfront views. The similarities to Paris on that front are real, but we enjoyed that smaller city size and much more relaxed, walkable, and welcoming energy.
We loved exploring the fresh markets along the riverside or smaller ones sprinkled throughout Bordeaux. So French and so delicious.
From the wine perspective, there are some very cool wine shops in the city center that are like visiting an art gallery. And if you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by wine terminology, Bordeaux offers a must-visit museum, La Cité du Vin. This isn't a dusty, quiet museum; it’s a hyper-modern, interactive multi-sensory experience designed to make wine culture accessible to everyone. We’re not huge museum fans, but this was a choose your own adventure, interactive museum that you could easily spend hours exploring and learning.
Left Bank vs. Right Bank: Finding Your Style
Outside the city center, Bordeaux divides into two main tasting regions separated by the Gironde Estuary: the Left Bank (of the estuary) and the Right Bank.
Over on the Left Bank (famous for Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends in regions like the Médoc), you’ll find those jaw-dropping, Disney-like châteaux you see on postcard racks, including legendary estates like Château Margaux. It’s grand, majestic, and steeped in history.
Over on the Right Bank the vibe shifts. Here you find Saint-Émilion, a precious medieval village perched among the vines. The wine here leans heavily on Merlot, making it softer and more approachable on the palate.
This was my second time visiting Saint-Émilion and it brought back a flood of memories from my very first visit back in my college days. Back then, as a budget backpacker, I remember a quiet, sleepy village where you could wander the cobblestone lanes largely on your own. Decades later, and now with official UNESCO World Heritage status, the town is busier and more polished. Though some things remain the same as when I was carrying a backpack - ancient stone cellars, a charming village, the Monolithic Church (underground!) and of course a glass (or two) of world-class wine.
The real shift in perspective happens inside the tasting rooms. Drinking Bordeaux shouldn't feel like taking an exam. When, thanks to my friend and winemaker Kevin Green, we had the opportunity to sit down with a passionate multi-generation winery owner. We learned why the gravel soil under your feet makes the wine taste the way it does and the pretense vanishes. It stops being about status and becomes a story of family, weather, and craft. As they say, good wine is the wine you enjoy drinking!
Unlike in the US, wine tasting here happens in the morning and early afternoon, and almost always requires an advanced reservation; drop-ins are not generally welcomed.
The Ultimate Day Trip: Oysters and E-Bikes in Cap Ferret
One of the biggest mistakes travelers make when visiting Bordeaux is spending all of their time in vineyards. And our group would have done just that if not for my insistence on visiting one of the region’s secrets - its proximity to the Atlantic coast.
For the ultimate palate cleanser, we visited Cap Ferret - a chic, laid-back coastal enclave on the Arcachon Bay. We rented e-bikes to cruise along pine-forested bike paths, hit the wild Atlantic beaches, and spend a lazy afternoon at a wooden oyster “shack” right on the water. Slurping fresh oysters harvested that morning paired with a crisp, local dry white wine was the perfect respite to a week of heavy red wine cellar tours, and the summer heat.

It’s easy to view Bordeaux as an exclusive, intimidating wine fortress. But when you trade rigid tasting rules for authentic conversations with local winemakers, and balance grand châteaux with a breezy afternoon riding bikes along the coast, your perspective on the region completely transforms.
In an age where AI and search engines can churn out generic, top-10 lists in seconds, true travel expertise isn't about gathering data, it's about nuance, timing, and human connection. An algorithm can tell you where a château is, but it can't tell you which winemaker will actually welcome you like family, how to navigate Saint-Émilion’s crowds to find its quietest corners, or how to seamlessly weave an oyster-tasting coastal escape into a wine country itinerary.
